How to Approach Rails

Approaching rails

This applies to approach a rail from a boat or a cable system. (Ollie on or Ride on)

Edge smoothly and swiftly towards the start of the obstacle. Aim to carve out to the slider in an arc shape, so that you are square to the obstacle only a couple of meters before it.

Edging too early will result in you being pulled off the slider before you are at the end. Edging to late will not allow enough time for you to flatten off.

You can approach obstacles on both your heels and your toes. Its best if you don’t neglect either side when starting out.

Always flatten off just before you hit the obstacle. If you don’t you may end up in a position like in this photo below.

*When using some winches you may have to hit the rail straight on, this is to avoid the line in the spool altering the gearing of the winch. Which will consequently adjust the speed, making it hard to ensure a good ollie.

Hope this Helps, Happy rail riding!
